Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) Upgrade – 1000HE EeePC

So… I decided to bite the bullet and forge forward with the dist upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 last night… Ok, so let’s be honest – I let curiosity take control once again, allowing my cautious mind to be overridden: allowing the entry of ‘sudo update-manager -d’ in the terminal…
This was about 11PM last night – I awoke to about 90% completion about 6am… This in itself gave rise to concern with me – not that it actually ‘means’ anything in itself, but – well, I just know that a lot is being swapped out in this release and the removal of HAL alone has had me nervous (I understand the decision, but such changes can mean fun for early adopters).
I am however happy to say that everything seems to be working great after the upgrade to 10.04. I haven’t had time to put it through its paces properly, but all systems currently seem go and all seems to be functioning at least as well as before – always a welcome thing when moving to an Alpha release of Ubuntu.

Kudos, Ubuntu team! This Alpha upgrade has been the smoothest for me to date…

I will post back if I encounter anything – neat and new or newly broken…

  1. Hi,
I was just wondering if hybernation was working for you, as I have that problem with my Asus eeepc 1000he.

    Thanks,

    1. What problem are you having specifically with Hibernation?

Mine is working without any modification from base install – albeit with a slow resume.

I have noticed that I often times have to tap ESC or click a mouse button to get it to ‘wake up’ when resuming from hibernation. The hard drive also spins like crazy when it resumes and it takes about 120% longer to resume hibernation + log in than it does to start from cold boot. This said, once it restores fully from hibernation, all seems to work just fine – screensavers, powersaving, wifi, sound (all the things that normally may crap-out on resume).

  2. Hello. When I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my EeePC 1000HE everything was working fine but after update can’t connect to Wifi network. Always asks for password and when I press “Ok” it simply doesn’t connect. Did it happen to you too? If so, how did you manage to solve it? It’s really driving me crazy… *sigh*

    1. When you say that you are being prompted for a password, is this a prompt for your keyring or for a protected access point? Chances are, if you are being prompted for a password and you are just hitting [ENTER], that is the problem.

I would check to see that the wireless is connecting to the correct Access Point (Wireless Router) and that you are entering the correct password for that access point. If its a keyring prompt, the password should be the same as what is was before you upgraded.

Have you checked your System Logs? This will likely tell you exactly what the root of your problem is. Let me know if you need additional help pursuing these leads…

        1. Thank you for coming back and sharing that information with us! I am happy that you were able to track down the cause of this problem. My 1000HE has the Atheros AR928X wireless chipset, which works without tweaking – hence why I wasn’t experiencing the same problem. Funny thing is, now that I think about it, I had a very similar problem to the one that you have described on my 1000HE using Jaunty initially and could not connected to secured networks without some trickery and magic!

  3. Hi,
I installed lucid on my 1000he with beta version, after upgraded my bios to 1104 eee-controller and volume function keys stopped working. Now ı made a clean install yesterday with 10.04 final but volume up and down and mute function keys still doesn’t work (brightness works though).Any ideas ? (BTW Asus does not let me go back my bios to vers :1002 it gives an error)

    1. I would start with post 5 from this thread. First, it shows that you are not alone and that this issue isn’t specific to the newest Ubuntu and instead is specific to the Bios revision…

The user GMC provides a link in this thread for a work around, though it doesn’t appear to be a fix… I will post back if I find anything further, but this has not proven to be a problem to me as I didn’t upgrade the bios.. When it comes to Bios releases, I take the approach of “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” 🙂

  4. I upgraded to 10.04 last night from 9.10… everything seems to work so far but there’s no sound… tried to play some music using rhythmbox but no sound at all… please help

    1. I would begin with checking my sound settings [System > Preferences] and seeing that I have the correct hardware selected and configured [Hardware Tab]. You will have several options – experimentation often will yield the best results… If it helps, my settings are set to “Analog Stereo Duplex”.

Check to see if pulseaudio is running too… If not, you can always kick it off by pressing ALT+F2 and entering ‘pulseaudio’ in the run prompt…

Also, ensure that it isn’t fully muted…

Let me know if this isn’t it and I can possibly help you further…

  5. I am currently installing 10.04 on my 1000he. I am doing a new install not an upgrade, but for some reason it doesn’t seem to detect my wireless card at all. i don’t know if my wireless is just turned off or what but there is not even a network icon up in the right corner? anyone have any suggestions on how i can get it working? I was also wondering if anyone know a way to get the function keys working? thanks.
